Dr. Cath Henshall has a life time’s experience with horses, riding from early childhood. She competed in eventing as a teenager as well as learning to start her own horses. After a career in the arts and event management, Cath returned to her first love, studying equine management at Adelaide University where she also gained an amateur trainer’s licence, training and riding thoroughbred racehorses and preparing horses for sale for clients. In the mid 2000s Cath combined her love of horses with her event management experience, managing the Adelaide International Horse Trials, at the time the only CCI***** three-day event in the Southern Hemisphere and held right in the Adelaide CBD. In more recent times Cath gained a Master of Animal Science and then a PhD on the effects of stress and exercise on equine cognition and welfare. Cath has twenty-year career as a teacher and lecturer in equine studies, animal welfare, animal ethics and livestock production in vocational and university settings. She has also managed her own horse training and coaching business, which was focussed on introducing evidence based horsepersonship to ordinary horse owners. Cath has worked in animal welfare law enforcement investigating livestock cruelty cases and for government departments conducting research and developing educational materials on animal welfare. Cath has been an invited guest lecturer at universities in Australia and the UK. Cath is currently working as a lecturer in Equine Science and as a Post Doctoral Fellow investigating indicators of emotional state in thoroughbred racehorses at Charles Sturt University, Australia and at Southern Cross University on animal behaviour and welfare teaching delivery. Cath is the current Junior Vice President of the International Society for Equitation Science and is a member of ISAE. She is the author or co-author of over 20 peer reviewed publications. Cath is the proud owner-guardian of nine retired horses including three off-the track thoroughbreds who help out as research subjects from time to time while enjoying life on her farm in rural Australia.
